Passover History

Passover isupon us! For those of you whoaren’t familiar with thisspecial day, Passover is celebrated as a remembrance of God delivering the Israelites from their slavery in ancient Egypt.

After over 400years of living as foreign slavesin the land, God showed the Pharaoh10 plagues (or wonders or signs) to prove that Heis God and Pharaoh wasnot. The last and most devastating sign was the death of every firstborn son livingin a house where thedoorway wasnotcovered by the blood of a lamb (a picture of the Messiah).

As the Israelites prepared to leave Egyptafter this last sign, God instructed them toeat the lamb whose blood they just spread over their doors with bitter herbs andunleavened bread, since they don’t have time to wait for the bread to rise. AfterPharaoh released the Hebrews,Godtold them to have a feast at the beginning of every year to remember this time: a Passover mealof roasted meat, bitter herbs, andunleavened bread.

There’s definitely more to the story than that, but you get the general idea. If you’re interested in knowing more, you can read it in the Bible in Exodus chapters 5-13.
