Please join the USS Hornet as we honor ourVietnam War Veterans on March 30, 2024. National Vietnam War Veterans Day (actual holiday is 03/29/2024) is a day to remember and honor the 9 million Americans who served during that war, as well as the 58,000 names on the wall at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC.
The USS Hornet CVS-12 was an anti-submarine aircraft carrier that served 3 tours off the coast of Vietnam at Yankee Station in the latter years of her active service. Most of the ship has been left in the exact state it was when it was decommissioned in 1970. Included in our aircraft collection are several from this era, including our US-2B Tracker, F8U-1 Crusader, TA-4J Skyhawk, UH-34D Seahorse, SH-2 Seasprite, SH-3H SeaKing, and our F4J Phantom II.
We have a special speaker coming to the USS Hornet on March 30, starting at 11 AM:Bill Collier, Vietnam War Marine Helicopter Pilot and author.Bill also flew for Air America after the Vietnam War.Bill flew the UH-34D Seahorse Helicopter on display at the USS Hornet Museum and will share his experiences with everyone who comes to the museum on the 30th.The main presentation starts at 11 AM and Bill will also have copies of his books for sale that he will be happy to autograph. The USS Hornet Museum will also have a special Vietnam War temporary exhibit up all weekend, curated by our partners from the Nisei Veteran’s Exhibit.

John Van Grinsven, a Vietnam veteran and former Ward County state’s attorney, will be the speaker. Van Grinsven entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968, serving about one year at San Diego, California, (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) and Camp Pendleton, California. He served for one year in the Republic of South Vietnam. The program will also include quilt presentations to three brothers who served in Vietnam by Lynn Heald, chair of the Peace and Honor Quilts of Valor Minot Program. Several Gold Star families attending also will be honored. Others taking part in the program include Hailey Cree of Velva High School, who will sing the national anthem, and a color guard of Vietnam veterans representing four military services. American Legion Post 697—Morningside—Sioux City Scottish Rite, Sioux City York Rite, Omadi/Olive Branch Masonic Lodges along with Siouxland Freedom Park will host the 7th annual observance of Vietnam War Veterans Day on Friday, March 29th, 2024. All veterans and active military will receive a free dinner, others are encouraged to make a free-will offering. The public is encouraged to attend. Dinner and the program will be at the Knights of Columbus in South Sioux City, NE, located at 1805 West 29th Street. Doors open at 6 pm with dinner served at 6:30 pm. There will be a choice of beef or fish. Desserts provided by the South Sioux City Chamberettes.

Guest speakers of VA Sioux Falls Executive Director /CEO Sara Ackert and VA Dakota Regional Office Director Shawn Bohn and his staff; Lunch; and Vietnam Vets Still Coming Home Book Signing/Sales. Vietnam Era Veterans are invited to show their medals, photo books, and other memorabilia during the event.
